Machu Picchu, also known as “The Lost City of the Incas” is a site that is located on the Andes of Peru. It is located at the height of 2,430 meters above the sea level. This majestic place is a very popular and famous ruin in the world. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Most of the tourist who comes to Peru actually is attracted the beauty of Machu Picchu.
Renowned American archaeologist Hiram Bingham rediscovered the site with the help of the locals. This place is perched dramatically above the Urubamba River. It is the endpoint of the famous Inca Trail hike.
The history of Machu Picchu is very remarkable, and it is still very unclear what was the site used for those days. Many studies believe that this place was a country resort for elite Incas. At a time less than 750 people can stay in that place. The Incas started constructing in the year AD 1430. The project was stopped during the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire.
The design of the place is quite remarkable as it is well hidden and well protected. It is located far up in the mountains of Peru. The Spanish conquistadors missed the site because of its cleaver design. But again the reference to this city in much text also vouches for the fact that many people knew about this ancient city. It was by Bingham that Machu Picchu was scientifically discovered. He was on his exploration to find the last capital of the Inca. He was in search of the Vilcabamba but eventually discovered the far more important discovery, the Machu Picchu.
In the year 1981, Machu Picchu was declared as the Peruvian Historical Sanctuary and then UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site in 1983. The Spanish were unable to find this place; the local’s believed this place to be a sacred place.
The style that was used to build the city was the traditional Inca style. The polished dry stones are the perfect example of that. The primary buildings are atana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. These are located in the scared district of Machu Picchu. In the year 2007, in an agreement between Peru and Yale University, decided to return the artifacts which were stolen by Hiram Bingham in the early twentieth century.
